Welcome to the website for the
Vintage Airstream Club's
2018 Rocky Mountain Rally
call our settlement the Rockin'
Wally-B Ranch you won't find it
on a map,
yet it is real...it exists wherever we are!
In Colorado there’s a special highway built in the late 1880's,
it's one of the nation’s most spectacular drives.
The Million Dollar Highway stretches for about 25 miles between Silverton and Ouray
in western Colorado, following U.S. 550 it's part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway.
Between Durango and Silverton the Skyway loosely parallels the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
The highway delivers jaw-dropping vista after vista. Yes, as the driver, from the south-to-north
you may be on the "outside" for a while (only for about 12 miles) with a hell of a view,
but let your passenger do the looking - you'll want to watch the road.
Forget standard driving safety measures like guardrails and shoulders, there aren't any on this stretch,
so swerving off the road is not advised!
There are plenty of pull-outs for pictures & gazing...or if you are coming from the north -
you can avoid towing through this section and enjoy the views as a "day trip".
Just take it slow & easy and you will be rewarded with the spectacular views, a badge of honor and
arrival at the 2018 Rocky Mountain VAC "Million Dollar Rally" site!
We will circle the wagons four nights/five days in
a sleepy little town of about 1,000 residents.
August 2-6, 2018
Ridgway is nestled in the picturesque
Uncompaghre Valley and surrounded by the majestic snow capped peaks of the
Cimarrons and San Juans, some of the most photographed mountains in the world.
Our rally site will be a terrific gateway for exploring...
Ouray - 10 miles
Montrose - 27 miles
Silverton - 33 miles
Telluride - 40 miles
...all within an hours drive or
Durango - 80 miles...
a good place to stop for the night, if you are coming from the south
Not only is Ridgway and the surrounding area known for its outdoor adventures,
abundant wildlife and rich mining history, the area has been the setting
for several famous western movies as well -
John Wayne's "True Grit",
"How the West Was Won" and "Tribute to a Bad Man".
Not to be passed by, it's also home to
Eatery 66 - the "farm to trailer" Airstream-cafe featured in the
Spring 2018 issue of Airstream Life.
Ridgway's elevation is 6,985 - temperatures will range from mid 80's to low 50's
and a thunderstorm could drop some rain.
As with previous RMVAC rallies, we will be dry-camping "Wally-Style", this year at
the Ouray County Fairgrounds.
